Video of professor G. Mohan Gopal shared as Chief Justice of Singapore Sundaresh Menon’s remarks on theocratic judges in the Indian Judiciary

A video is being shared on social media claiming it as the visuals of Sundaresh Menon, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Singapore, making comments on how the constitution of India was being hijacked by a few theocratic judges to turn India into a Hindu Rashtra. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: Chief Justice of Singapore Sundaresh Menon’s remarks on theocratic judges in the Indian Judiciary.

Fact: The man expressing concerns over theocratic judges in the video is Professor Dr. G. Mohan Gopal, a Constitutional Law Expert, a well-known legal academician and the former Director of the National Judicial Academy. Mohan Gopal while addressing a seminar organised by the Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms (CJAR), raised concerns over the appointment of judges with political bias and highlighted the motive of hijacking the judiciary and establishing a Hindu theocracy in the country.  The video has nothing to do with Singapore Supreme Court Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.

A watermark of ‘Live Law’ can be seen in the top-right corner of the video. When we searched for this video using relevant keywords on the internet, a video with similar visuals was found published on the Live Law YouTube channel on 21 February 2023. Live Law published the video with a description, “Theocratic Judges Who Find Source Of Law In Religion Than Constitution Increased: Dr Mohan Gopal”.

Professor Dr. G. Mohan Gopal is a renowned legal academician and the Former Director of the National Judicial Academy. While addressing a seminar organised by the Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms (CJAR), G. Mohan Gopal raised concerns over the appointment of judges with political bias and highlighted the motive of hijacking the judiciary and establishing a Hindu theocracy in the country. On 03 February 2023, Chief Justice of Singapore Sundaresh Menon watched the proceedings of the Supreme Court alongside the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. Sundaresh Menon was the chief guest at the event to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of the establishment of the Supreme Court on 03 February 2023. Sundaresh Menon did not make any such comments as mentioned in the post on Indian Judiciary and about the appointment of judges in the country.

To sum it up, a video of renowned legal academician G. Mohan Gopal is shared as Chief Justice of Singapore Sundaresh Menon’s remarks on theocratic judges in the Indian Judiciary.

Video From Bangladesh Falsely Shared as Muslims Blocking a Road in West Bengal

A video showing a group of men holding rods and blocking an armoured vehicle and ambulance from passing through the street is being widely shared on social media.

What is the claim?: The video is being shared as one from West Bengal, claiming that it shows people from the Muslim community stopping members of the Armed forces while they were taking away injured 'Lashkar soldiers'.

  • The claim comes a few weeks after two Border Security Force (BSF) jawans were reportedly attacked by villagers near the border of Bangladesh.

An archive of this post can be seen here.

(Source: Facebook/Screenshot)

How did we find out?: We noticed that logo with two crossed swords, as seen on the ambulance and the army personnel's uniforms.

  • This indicated that they belonged to the Bangladesh army.

We noticed the Bangladesh Army's insignia.

  • Using InVID, we had divided the video into multiple keyframes and ran a reverse image search on some them.

  • This led us to a longer version of the video uploaded by user HM Al Amin as a Facebook Live on 28 March 2021.

  • It was shared with the caption which translates to “Army at Hathazari Road."

  • We noticed that one of the boards in the video read, “আল হেরা তাহফিজুল কুরআন ইসলামি একাডেমী” (Translation: “Al Hera Tahfizul Quran Islamic Academy”).

  • The board is visible at around 4:33 in the Facebook Live.

The board shows an Islamic Academy in Chittagong's Hathazari.

  • According to the Academy’s Facebook page, it is located in Isapur, Fayzia Bazar in Chittagong’s Hathazari.

  • We looked up the street view of Isapur Fayzia Bazar on Google Maps and found a building similar to the one in the viral video.

We found that the video was taken in Chittagong's Isapur.

Conclusion: An old video from Bangladesh, showing people protesting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the country is being shared with false claims.
